Meditation on Forgiveness

Meditation – Forgiveness- August 9, 2013 at 6:20am written by Michael A. White

Father, I think today about our grudges [bitterness, ill feelings, hatreds, chips on our shoulders), and wonder how we miss our forgiveness lessons, delivered by Your grace, and Your mercy, as our eyes flutter open each day. Time and time again, we read about it, every now and again, we hear about it through Word [the Bible], preached, and daily, we experience, forgiveness, where grudges are terminated from Your thought, and our slates [accounts, tabs, bills], are wiped away, with opportunities for “more” chances, to get right, and to get it right.

We do what we must oh Lord, in our processing of how we feel when we feel wronged [mistreated, offended, persecuted, hurt, wounded]. We may even realize the penalties of carrying the brunt [impact, force, effect, burden], of those feelings alone; we may look angry, bitter, troubled, unforgiving, on the outside to others, while feeling really torn up, hurt, injured, in our spirits, on our insides, oh and maybe Your lack of forgiveness toward us. Are we missing, are we not focusing on the power of forgiveness, not only what is may mean to others [letting them off the hook, giving them a break, a pass], but what it “will” mean to us?

Through You oh God, and by Your son Jesus, our Christ, our Redeemer, we learn the limitless [unlimited, inexhaustible, never-ending], boundaries, the actions of forgiving are, and by our faith, believe, understand, the proper roads to take; if we are wronged, we forgive, wronged again, forgive again, and again, and again, limitlessly, inexhaustibly, never-ending. Maybe we treat resentment [anger, hatred, bitterness, dislike], and forgiveness, as four-letter words, words we shouldn’t say and practice not using them in sentences, or simply call them burdens or yokes [burdens, bondages, loads, annoyances], ready to come to You, our protector and provider of all things good, for more lesson on love, and of course our lesson, targeted [directed, aimed, pointed], specifically [exactly, precisely, in detail], on forgiveness.

Sometimes Lord, we need a revival [renewal, recovery, restoration], lesson on what Your love really means to us. We exercise too much of our own abilities to pick and choose our subsets [subsections, subcategories, subdivisions], when Your love, encompasses [includes, contains, cover], all categories, including forgiveness. Let us each, by You strength learn our valuable lesson, then share them with the world, in the mighty name of Jesus, our Christ, our Redeemer [Savior, Rescuer, Liberator]. Amen.

Read Matthew 18:21-35  A Story About Forgiveness   The Message (MSG)

Matthew 6:14-15 The Message (MSG) 14-15 “In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.

Mark 11:25 The Message (MSG)  22-25 Jesus was matter-of-fact: “Embrace this God-life. Really embrace it, and nothing will be too much for you. This mountain, for instance: Just say, ‘Go jump in the lake’—no shuffling or shilly-shallying—and it’s as good as done. That’s why I urge you to pray for absolutely everything, ranging from small to large. Include everything as you embrace this God-life, and you’ll get God’s everything. And when you assume the posture of prayer, remember that it’s not all asking. If you have anything against someone, forgive—only then will your heavenly Father be inclined to also wipe your slate clean of sins.”

Colossians 3:12-14 The Message (MSG)  12-14 So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.

Do you believe these statements?  Are they real for you?  These are truths from the word of God.  And they are for each of us.  How do you feel when you read them?  How do they make you feel?

The truth is each statement reveals what our blessed Savior gave us.  What a gift.

“May the God of…

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13

Do you remember these lyrics, “There is no secret what God can do, what He done for others, he’ll do for you?”   This song is not sung that often in today’s churches, however the meaning is true.  Our God is no respecter of person.  He showers blessings upon us each day.  He grants forgiveness to his beloved yet wayward children who frequently mess up. And yet, in His infinite mercy and grace God fills us with His spirit.  We are the recipients of divine hope, immaculate grace, priceless joy, and unmerited love.  Our most wonderful Lord provides us with peace that passes all understanding if we trust in His word.

Rest in the holy and comforting knowledge that this day you are the recipient of God’s hope.  And may that knowledge strengthen you.

Golden Text

I’m reading and studying the book of Daniel Chapter 9 for our School of Wisdom.  The lesson focuses on Daniel’s prayer of confession for Israel’s sins.  As he prayed, Daniel acknowledged everything done in the past that caused their exile and captivity.  What was remarkable was, although Daniel was not directly involved he included himself in the prayer because it was his nation, and his ancestors.

“Confessing guilt is difficult, but it is an absolute necessity for us.”  Think about this.  Job also made prayers of confession and sacrifices for his children, because he wasn’t certain if they had.  Proverbs 28:13 states, ” He that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” [KJV]

How often are the sins of our forefathers, or even this nation included in your prayers of confession?    “All have sin and come short”, the Holy Scripture says.  I know I forget sometimes to confess the past sins of my family, and seek God’s atonement.  Joseph E. Falkner wrote, “children do not bear personal guilt and responsibility for the sins of their ancestors, but they do suffer the consequences.”   Sins travel down the timeline.  As prayer warriors, and bearers of the message of Christ, shouldn’t we confess the sins of our ancestors, and this nation?  The Bible says, if we confess “our sins” he is faithful and just to cleanse us from all unrighteousness [paraphrased].  Daniel’s prayer mentioned Israel’s past rebellion and disobedience.

Aren’t we are living through the timeline of past sins of our forefathers.  It is no different today.  The issues which plague us today are the cause and result of the same rebellious and disobedient attitudes.

I challenge you to include to prayer of confession for the guilt and sins of your ancestors if you have never done so.  We serve a faithful and merciful God.  His mercy and love endures through all generations.  We may be living through the righteous justice of God, but we will find mercy for those sins when we admit them.

I pray God’s mercy and anointing power to heal those areas from our past, and cover you and this nation with His grace.

Always There

A Devotion from C.H. Spurgeon

I will never leave thee. Hebrews 13:5

No promise is of private interpretation. Whatever God has said to any one saint, He has said to all.  When He opens a well for one, it is that all may drink. When He openeth a granary-door to give out food, there may be some one starving man who is the occasion of its being opened, but all hungry saints may come and feed too.

Whether He gave the word to Abraham or to Moses, matters not, O believer; He has given it to thee as one of the covenanted seed. There is not a high blessing too lofty for thee, nor a wide mercy too extensive for thee.  Lift up now thine eyes to the north, and to the sourth, to the east and to the west, for all this is thine.  Climb to Pisgah’s top, and view the utmost limit of the divine promise, for the land is all thine own.  There is not a brook of living water of which thou mayest not drink. If the land floweth with milk and honey, eat the honey and drink the milk, for both are thine. Be thou bold to believe, for He hath said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” In this promise, God gives to His people everything. “I will never leave thee.”  Then no attribute of God can cease to be engaged for us.  Is He mighty? [Is He mighty?]  He will show Himself strong on the behalf of them that trust Him.  Is He love? [Is He love?] Then with loving kindness will He have mercy upon us. Whatever attributes may compose the character of Deity, everyone of them to its fullest extent shall be engaged on our side. To put everything in one, there is nothing you can want, there is nothing you can ask for , there is nothing you can need in time or in eternity, there is nothing living, nothing dying, there is nothing in their world, nothing in the next world, there is nothing now, nothing at resurrection-morning, nothing in heaven which is not contained in this text–“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”  [Joshua 1:8-9]

Dear Lord, Help me to remember you are always there, and to walk in the confidence of your promise.  I pray that all who read this message will share the truth of your word to all they meet. In Jesus’ name.  Amen

What Matters Most is Love

Let your religion be less of a theory and more of a love affair.” G.K. Chesterton

“Whoever loves much, does much.” Thomas A. Kempis

“Our God is not made of stone. His heart is the most sensitive and tender of all. No act goes unnoticed, no matter how insignificant or small. A cup of cold water is enough to put tears in the eyes of God. God celebrates our feeble expressions of gratitude.”  Richard J. Foster

“I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love.” Mother Theresa

“Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it.  Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life: love illuminates it”  Martin Luther King, Jr.

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.  John 15:12

Dear God, help us this day to love you with all our hearts, minds and souls, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen

Happy Valentine’s Day

Love penetrates the defenses that have been built up to protect against rejection and scorn and belittlement, and it sees life created by God for love.” Eugene H. Peterson

Our lives were created by God for love – that’s right, you and me created for love.  Pretty amazing when you consider it. Our Creator designed us to be love. Love is an action word, although some think it is a feeling.  However, love creates an atmosphere where the unlovable is now the object of profound love.  Love drives us to save the lost and hurting.  Love expends everything to build homes for the homeless, provide food for the hungry, and give water to the thirsty.  Love demonstrates patience when dealing with a rebellious child.  Love shows compassion for each sinner. Love delivers kindness, forgiveness, joy, goodness when the darkness of the world creeps in.  Love means to sacrifice, to give, to cherish, to show mercy, and to correct injustice.   Love is God, who loved this world so much that he gave is only begotten Son for us.   God loved and created us in His image.   Love is action.

Lyrics from a song made popular by Dionne Warwick, “What the world needs now is love, sweet love…it’s the only thing that there is just too little of..”   If there is too little love in the world on this day, and during this month, then show the world what we were made of-love.   All of the faith, and hope in this world, love is the greatest.

Show your love this day.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all the marvelous manifestations of love.

A Day of Grace and Divine Love

The work of Christ on the cross did not influence God to love us, did not increase that love by one degree, and did not open any fount of grace or mercy in His heart. He had loved us from eternity, and needed nothing to stimulate that love.  The cross is not responsible for God’s love; rather it was His love which conceived the cross as the one method by which we would be saved.”
